Zach Latimer Shows Speed Before Mechanical Issues at Sunset Speedway
Continuing to gain experience as a rookie, Latimer took part in Sunset Speedway’s Friday practice prior to the Velocity 250 weekend, finding some speed late in the night. That carried over into Saturday, with Latimer being 14th quickest out of 35 cars at the end of the second session, just three tenths off of the leader.
The confidence showed in his first heat as he was able to score a fourth-place finish. He then ran up front once again in the second qualifier, running second until the car developed a loose condition off of the exit of the corner. Despite the ill-handling condition, he held on to finish sixth.
Starting 14th in the feature, he would make his way forward in the beginning stages, escaping the early incidents to break into the top-10. He was up to the eighth position by Lap 8, when the mechanical issues would strike.
“Off the restart, the drive shaft came loose due to the output shaft on the motor coming loose, ending our night early,” he said. “We were in the road to a top 10 finish for sure.”
